Biography

Madam Burj (Burcu Akkoyun) is a contemporary visual artist whose practice is based between the United States and Türkiye. Her work explores identity, cultural memory, and the dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary figurative painting, creating a visual language that bridges heritage with the present.
Raised in a family deeply rooted in the arts, Madam Burj developed an early passion for painting through the influence of her father, a painter and sculptor educated at the School of Applied Fine Arts. She later strengthened her artistic foundation through independent drawing and figure studies in Türkiye, developing a lasting interest in composition, symbolism, and the expressive potential of the human figure.
In addition to her artistic practice, Madam Burj established a professional career in interior architecture and design. Her experience in spatial design, materiality, and composition continues to shape her paintings, where structure and symbolism merge into a distinctive contemporary visual language.
Living and creating between the United States and Türkiye has broadened her artistic perspective, allowing her to engage with different cultural experiences while remaining deeply connected to the values that shape her work. This dialogue between cultures has become an essential part of her creative process, inspiring paintings that explore identity as something living, evolving, and deeply personal.
One of Madam Burj's works was selected for exhibition by a gallery in the United States, introducing her work to an international audience.
